Summer is back! It’s the season of sunshine, laughter, and many outdoor adventures- and at Primrose Retirement Communities, we love seeing everyone enjoying each moment of it! Whether it’s a garden stroll, cookout with friends, or simply relaxing on the patio with a good book, there are so many ways to make summer memories.

But as temperatures rise, it’s also important to take a few extra steps to stay safe, especially when it comes to hydration and heat.

Enjoy the Sunshine- Smartly!

Getting outside is wonderful for both the body and mind. Just remember to:

  • Seek Shade Midday: The sun is strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you’re heading out, plan outdoor activities for the early morning or later afternoon.
  • Dress for the Weather: Light-colored, loose-fitting clothes and a wide-brimmed hat go a long way in keeping you cool and protecting your skin. You could also consider getting a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) shirt or pants. It’s designed to protect your skin from the harmful UV radiation from the sun. You can find UPF clothing at many clothing retailers near you, including Walmart!
  • Use Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen and reapply every two hours- even on a cloudy day. Remember to put sunscreen on your ears and neck!

Hydration is Key

A senior man is exercising outdoors and drinking water after a run while also wearing a light-colored t-shirt to not overheat from the sun.

Staying hydrated helps regulate our body’s temperature, keeps our energy levels up, and so much more! In an article from Harvard’s School of Public Health, they say that, “Experts recommend drinking roughly 11 cups of water per day for the average woman and 16 for men.” Here are some tips on how you can try to reach that goal daily:

  • Carry a Water Bottle: Make it part of your routine! Use or get a water bottle that you like and is easy to carry around with you. Fill it up in the morning and bring it with you wherever you go- take sips throughout the day.
  • Eat Hydrating Foods: Watermelon, berries, cucumbers, and oranges are not only delicious, but are packed with hydration as well.
  • Limit Caffeine & Alcohol: These drinks can lead to dehydration. Opt for water, herbal tea, or even electrolyte-rich beverages.

Know the Signs of Overheating

Being aware of how your body feels can help prevent heat-related illnesses. Look out for:

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Headaches
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Nausea
  • Muscle cramps

If you or someone you know shows these symptoms, move to a cooler area, hydrate, and rest. When in doubt, reach out to your medical team!
