Primrose Retirement Communities Founder Jim Thares Named 2026 Spring Commencement Speaker at Northern State University

ABERDEEN, SD – May 7, 2026 – Primrose Retirement Communities proudly announces that founder and Chief Executive Officer Jim Thares has been selected as the 2026 Spring Commencement Speaker at Northern State University (NSU) in Aberdeen, South Dakota. During the May 9th commencement ceremony, Thares will also receive an honorary Doctor of Public Service degree in recognition of his leadership, entrepreneurial success, and lifelong commitment to community service.

A native of Ipswich, South Dakota, Jim Thares earned a Bachelor of Science in accounting from Moorhead State University and began his career as a certified public accountant. Early in his professional life, he recognized a growing need for more independent senior living options while working in public accounting and later gaining experience in property development. In 1989, he founded Primrose Retirement Communities in Aberdeen, with the first community opening in 1991. Today, Primrose has grown into a multistate organization providing independent living, assisted living, and memory care services, grounded in a commitment to community, service, and quality of life.

Throughout his career, Thares has demonstrated a deep commitment to community leadership and public service. He has served on numerous boards, including the Presentation College Board of Trustees, the Northern State University Foundation, the South Dakota Horsemen’s Association, the South Dakota Thoroughbred Association, and the Catholic Community Foundation of Eastern South Dakota, and the South Dakota Board of Regents.

“Jim’s selection as Northern State University’s Spring Commencement Speaker is a proud moment for Aberdeen, honoring a leader whose vision took root here and grew into a lasting commitment to service and community,” said Primrose Executive Vice President of Operations, Amanda Daughters.

Primrose Retirement Communities congratulates the Northern State University Class of 2026 and celebrates this meaningful recognition of Jim Thares’ service and leadership.

We have lived with our dog Duke at Primrose since it has opened about 3 years ago. Being able to live in our home for many years was a gift but we knew that it was time to downsize and move to a smaller home. What we enjoy most here at Primrose is being part of a community. The people are wonderful, the activities are both educational and fun, and the food is amazing! Living so close to people keeps us both healthier and happier. We can come and go as we please, and take part in the activities that we wish to do. I think the advice I would give to others that are thinking about moving is to stop thinking about it. Moving to Primrose was the best thing that we have ever decided to do!

I lived here since they opened in 2018. Professionally I did a lot of clerical work for the city, county, and state. When I was younger I worked at Moon Beach Church Camp, where my parents were camp cooks. I also enjoyed playing the ukulele while my Mom played the piano at the camp.

After my husband passed away my place was too big for just me and I needed to downsize. Although I was apprehensive to move, being alone was lonely and I needed to be around people.

People are kind here and like a family. I look forward to simple things here like coffee time in the morning, the noon meal, and Happy Hour! There is always so much going on from ice cream socials, book club, and bridge, to just simply walking outside. A little secret that I want to share with the world… the staff is awesome, they really care!

Primrose is a high quality residence where my grandmother currently lives. I’ve enjoyed my visits and my Grandma loves the environment and community, participating in many of its activities. The location is clean and the team there seems very friendly and caring. The pub is very cool and we’ve had impromptu family gatherings there.
