Preventing Depression Through Connection and Care in Senior Living

Preventing Depression Through Connection and Care in Senior Living

According to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, older adults lacking face-to-face contact with family and friends are at almost twice the risk of developing depression as those who see friends and family regularly.  Data collected from more than 11,000 adults age 50 and older was used in the study, which was conducted by the University of Michigan as part of their Health and Retirement Survey done between 2004 and 2010.

The more personal, the better

Details of the study indicate that regular contact via telephone, letter or email has little, if any, effectiveness in offsetting the risk of depression associated with the lack of face-to-face contact.  In fact, only 6.5% of participants who had face-to-face contact three times or more each week showed symptoms of depression, compared to 11.5% who had in-person contact only once every few months or less.

Past research also suggests that lack of social interaction of any kind can contribute to premature death, increasing the chance by 14%, which is twice that of obesity.  Socially engaged seniors are also more resilient, allowing them to more easily cope with adversity in their lives and in the lives of their friends and families.

It is not good for us to be alone

This study is but one in a long line that indicate we are a social people, and that our lives are richer and more meaningful when we have someone to share them with.

At Primrose, community is at the heart of everything we do.  Friendships blossom here, as seniors from all walks of life share their stories with one another.  Our residents often find that they have more time to go where they want and do what they want with their friends and families – and leave the housework to someone else!  In fact, many of our assisted living residents experience positive changes in their health simply by spending time with their peers in such a supportive and active environment.

If you or a senior loved one are struggling with depression and isolation, and if you have questions about how Primrose can help, we would be honored to visit with you.

We have lived with our dog Duke at Primrose since it has opened about 3 years ago. Being able to live in our home for many years was a gift but we knew that it was time to downsize and move to a smaller home. What we enjoy most here at Primrose is being part of a community. The people are wonderful, the activities are both educational and fun, and the food is amazing! Living so close to people keeps us both healthier and happier. We can come and go as we please, and take part in the activities that we wish to do. I think the advice I would give to others that are thinking about moving is to stop thinking about it. Moving to Primrose was the best thing that we have ever decided to do!

I lived here since they opened in 2018. Professionally I did a lot of clerical work for the city, county, and state. When I was younger I worked at Moon Beach Church Camp, where my parents were camp cooks. I also enjoyed playing the ukulele while my Mom played the piano at the camp.

After my husband passed away my place was too big for just me and I needed to downsize. Although I was apprehensive to move, being alone was lonely and I needed to be around people.

People are kind here and like a family. I look forward to simple things here like coffee time in the morning, the noon meal, and Happy Hour! There is always so much going on from ice cream socials, book club, and bridge, to just simply walking outside. A little secret that I want to share with the world… the staff is awesome, they really care!

Primrose is a high quality residence where my grandmother currently lives. I’ve enjoyed my visits and my Grandma loves the environment and community, participating in many of its activities. The location is clean and the team there seems very friendly and caring. The pub is very cool and we’ve had impromptu family gatherings there.
