3 Health Benefits of Enjoying the Outdoors

_K0C8251There is nothing like stepping outside on a cool, sunny morning and taking in a few deep breaths of fresh air. From the cold bite of a crisp winter day to the heat and humidity of the dog days of summer, there is just something about being outdoors that makes you feel better and more alive. Research points to the fact that nature improves your mind, body, and spirit – so here are three things to think about as you head out the door and into the wilderness.

 Nature is a natural relaxant
Research from the University of Michigan’s Psychology Department suggests that an outdoor environment rests your brain and protects it from over-stimulation. It also helps improve your memory by sharpening your focus, which is beneficial to everyone – especially those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

Nature is rich in vitamin D
The more you are outside, the more adept your body becomes at absorbing natural sources of vitamin D found in nature like the sun itself. Vitamin D provides many benefits to the body including strengthening of bones, protection against heart disease and diabetes, and fortification of the immune system to help protect against illness. If it is hot, be wary of spending too much time outdoors without adequate sun screen.

Nature may help prevent cancer
Although research on this connection is in its infancy, early studies suggest that spending time in nature may help the body produce an enhanced level of ant-cancer proteins. The increased level of these proteins may last up to a week after returning indoors. Japanese studies have even indicated that areas with more forests have lower mortality rates from cancer, although more study needs to be done in this area to come to any concrete conclusions.

We have lived with our dog Duke at Primrose since it has opened about 3 years ago. Being able to live in our home for many years was a gift but we knew that it was time to downsize and move to a smaller home. What we enjoy most here at Primrose is being part of a community. The people are wonderful, the activities are both educational and fun, and the food is amazing! Living so close to people keeps us both healthier and happier. We can come and go as we please, and take part in the activities that we wish to do. I think the advice I would give to others that are thinking about moving is to stop thinking about it. Moving to Primrose was the best thing that we have ever decided to do!

I lived here since they opened in 2018. Professionally I did a lot of clerical work for the city, county, and state. When I was younger I worked at Moon Beach Church Camp, where my parents were camp cooks. I also enjoyed playing the ukulele while my Mom played the piano at the camp.

After my husband passed away my place was too big for just me and I needed to downsize. Although I was apprehensive to move, being alone was lonely and I needed to be around people.

People are kind here and like a family. I look forward to simple things here like coffee time in the morning, the noon meal, and Happy Hour! There is always so much going on from ice cream socials, book club, and bridge, to just simply walking outside. A little secret that I want to share with the world… the staff is awesome, they really care!

Primrose is a high quality residence where my grandmother currently lives. I’ve enjoyed my visits and my Grandma loves the environment and community, participating in many of its activities. The location is clean and the team there seems very friendly and caring. The pub is very cool and we’ve had impromptu family gatherings there.
