Helping Seniors Prevent Fraud

Helping Seniors Prevent Fraud

_K0C6989Scam artists target senior citizens at an unprecedented rate. 5 million older adults are the victims of fraud and financial abuse each year, making it vital for our older loved ones to be wary of unsolicited attempts to gain access to their personal information. Here are some things you can do now to help protect them from these criminals:

Just shred it
Before throwing away any financial information that may contain account or social security numbers, be sure that these documents are shredded first. Scammers will go through garbage cans looking for this type of info – better to be proactive and destroy the evidence than to have to deal with someone stealing your identity and dealing with the heartache it causes.

Beware telephone scams
It is good to talk to your loved ones about not disclosing any personal information via phone or email.  In fact, if they don’t recognize the number it is good practice to remember to ignore the call altogether. Many of these scammers are quite crafty and will contact people numerous times, building trust with them before attempting to collect information they can use to drain bank accounts and steal identities. You can also put your loved ones’ phone number on the National Do Not Call Registry by dialing 1-888-382-1222 or visiting www.donotcall.gov.

Know who to contact
If you suspect that your loved ones been victimized, talk to them about it and see if you can figure out what happened. Turn to local police, your bank (if money has been taken from accounts), and Adult Protective Services (APS). To find the APS nearest you, call 1-800-677-1116 or visit www.eldercare.gov.

We have lived with our dog Duke at Primrose since it has opened about 3 years ago. Being able to live in our home for many years was a gift but we knew that it was time to downsize and move to a smaller home. What we enjoy most here at Primrose is being part of a community. The people are wonderful, the activities are both educational and fun, and the food is amazing! Living so close to people keeps us both healthier and happier. We can come and go as we please, and take part in the activities that we wish to do. I think the advice I would give to others that are thinking about moving is to stop thinking about it. Moving to Primrose was the best thing that we have ever decided to do!

After my husband passed away my place was too big for just me and I needed to downsize. Although I was apprehensive to move, being alone was lonely and I needed to be around people.

People are kind here and like a family. I look forward to simple things here like coffee time in the morning, the noon meal, and Happy Hour! There is always so much going on from ice cream socials, book club, and bridge, to just simply walking outside. A little secret that I want to share with the world… the staff is awesome, they really care!

Primrose is a high quality residence where my grandmother currently lives. I’ve enjoyed my visits and my Grandma loves the environment and community, participating in many of its activities. The location is clean and the team there seems very friendly and caring. The pub is very cool and we’ve had impromptu family gatherings there.
