When is the Right Time to Retire?

When is the Right Time to Retire?

Capture One Catalog0772Are you retired? Thinking of retiring? Once they hit their 60’s, many begin to feel like they want to eliminate the hustle and stress of employment in favor of a more laid-back lifestyle. In fact, a study from the University of Sydney’s School of Public Health indicates that there are physical and mental benefits to retirement including an increase in physical activity levels and reduction in smoking. Reductions in stress levels are also beneficial, as is the free-time that retirement provides to do the things you’ve always wanted to do. Here are some ways to know it is time to retire:

Your finances are in order
If your savings can support your lifestyle for 20+ years, you are likely well-prepared for retirement. Necessities like food, utilities, hobbies, entertainment, and medications should be factored in. Long term care insurance is also a wise investment and something else to consider when figuring your yearly expenses. It is especially useful if you find yourself wanting/needing to make a move to a retirement community.

Your spouse agrees
Often times, couples disagree about timelines and goals for retirement. One may want to keep working while the other may be ready to be done. One may want to move to a lake in the woods, another to a big city on the coast.
Make sure you and your spouse are on the same page so that you can retire as a team.

You have enough to do to keep you engaged
For some, spending all day doing nothing is not the ideal retirement arrangement. Take stock of your interests and hobbies and determine first if you can a?ord to continue doing them once you retire. If so, start planning with your spouse so that you don’t get caught in a retirement rut. Mix it up a bit – remember that there is a balance between engagement and relaxation, and that too much of either will likely cause problems.

We have lived with our dog Duke at Primrose since it has opened about 3 years ago. Being able to live in our home for many years was a gift but we knew that it was time to downsize and move to a smaller home. What we enjoy most here at Primrose is being part of a community. The people are wonderful, the activities are both educational and fun, and the food is amazing! Living so close to people keeps us both healthier and happier. We can come and go as we please, and take part in the activities that we wish to do. I think the advice I would give to others that are thinking about moving is to stop thinking about it. Moving to Primrose was the best thing that we have ever decided to do!

I lived here since they opened in 2018. Professionally I did a lot of clerical work for the city, county, and state. When I was younger I worked at Moon Beach Church Camp, where my parents were camp cooks. I also enjoyed playing the ukulele while my Mom played the piano at the camp.

After my husband passed away my place was too big for just me and I needed to downsize. Although I was apprehensive to move, being alone was lonely and I needed to be around people.

People are kind here and like a family. I look forward to simple things here like coffee time in the morning, the noon meal, and Happy Hour! There is always so much going on from ice cream socials, book club, and bridge, to just simply walking outside. A little secret that I want to share with the world… the staff is awesome, they really care!

Primrose is a high quality residence where my grandmother currently lives. I’ve enjoyed my visits and my Grandma loves the environment and community, participating in many of its activities. The location is clean and the team there seems very friendly and caring. The pub is very cool and we’ve had impromptu family gatherings there.
